Our flagship program is the Arete Fellowship, an 8-week tour through the principles and applications of Effective Altruism. Fellows complete an hour's worth of reading each week, centered around an aspect of the broader conversation about "doing good better," then come together for an hour of discussion in groups of 5-10, led by two board members of the Society.
Guided by the idea that "anything that can be destroyed by truth should be," this is a debate-oriented fellowship. Rather than pushing any particular conclusions, each week simply poses key questions, and provides reading materials to serve as fodder for argument. We look for potential fellows who will live up to this culture of intellectual openness: the goal is to have the courage to speak your mind even when the rest of the room disagrees, and the humility to update your beliefs when given good reason.
Applications for the Arete Fellowship open at the beginning of each semester. Those who complete the Fellowship become eligible for further involvement with the Society.
